“Nature is an infinite sphere whose center is everywhere”

Trip to the Charyn Ashen grove.

As you go down the Great Silk Road on the Almaty-Horgos highway, at the 210th kilometer, before the village of Chundzha in the Uighur district centre, through the desert area, down the valley, a beautiful panoramic view opens up - an oasis in the desert.
Numerous remnants of fossilised fauna, Carbon dated from 300 million years ago, are found on the slopes. Sights of living nature, the relict ash and Turang groves are fascinating. The Charyn ash grove occupies the area of 4855 ha; the Sogdian ash grows mainly in this area, the forest massif of which is the unique in our country.
There is the "Ash Dacha", a tourist base, where hunting can be organised. Here grows the Ash tree, a relict tree which lived through the catastrophic Glaciating Epoch and survived until the Quaternary Reiod Millions of years passed, mountains and climate changed, the surface of the Earth changed, different animals and plants appeared and disappeared, but the ash tree remained unchanged.
The unique Ashen Grove of 4855 ha is located in the Charyn Canyon river. It measures just 26 km in length. The riparian woodland, nesting in the flood-plain of the Charyn river, is the key water artery of the park.
Its area is 5014 hectares. This is the monument of nature - the Charyn ash grove, where the ancient relict, the Sogdian ash, is found. This is the second place in the world to have the unho- mogeneous stands of the Sogdian ash.
An ash tree grows up to 20 - 25 high at the age of 30. The maximum age is over 300 years. The crown of a tree at a younger age is narrow and roundish, and becomes huge when a tree matures. The trunk is straight.
The wood is hard and has beautiful texture. The period of shoot-forming capacity spans 40 - 60 years. It has an extensive root system that reaches down to ground waters to avoid the salty upper layers of soil. At the age of 4 - 6, it grows up to 1,5 m deep.
The age of seed production is 15 - 20 years. The seeds have germinating capacity of 3 - 4 years. Thanks to its heavy root system, an ash tree forms various communities, such as forests. It is the main type of forest, and phytocenosis occupy 35% of forest of the Sogdian ash, i.e. it is a relict and endemic to the forest estate.
Its importance is equal to the Charyn ash. The Charyn ash forest estate is not only of scientific value and ecological significance, but it also has an invaluable aesthetic influence. Those, who visit the forest, sink into a peculiar emotional state, when one starts thinking of the meaning of life, the unknown, etc.
Clear air, unusual quiet, river, ash grove, and sacred surroundings - all these give you an opportunity to feel the unity with the nature. It is here that you feel this connection, admire the nature's wonders, when there is a symbiose of deserts and forests, moisture-loving and drought- resistant trees.
This place is always beautiful. Spring surprises you with emerald green leaves, blooming of grass and bushes, their intoxicating fragrance. Summer amazes you with serenity and quietness. Autumn takes your breath away with bright colours of trees and shrubs, ranging from yellow to crimson red.
Winter strikes you with beautiful and slim trunks of ash trees, animal foot prints on the snow, ice drifting on the smooth surface of the river. The Charyn river valley is a unique place, where the remnants of prehistoric flora and fauna are found.
The multiple collections made in this valley, are one- of-a-kind. They feature the bones of large and small animals. The large mammals of the Charyn fauna are represented by mastodont, elephant, rhinoceros and Stenon's horse, which inhabited this area about 30 million years ago.
Variable terrain, soil, and hydrologic regime form a unique in every way natural monument, the Charyn ash forest estate.
