Charyn Canyon.

Trip to Charyn Canyon.

“It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change”

Charles Darwin.

Distance route to Charyn canyon.

Charyn Canyon -  “ the little  brother" of the American Grand Canyon. The canyon is reminiscent of the famous Colorado Grand Canyon in the USA, but in miniature. Its length is approx. 200 km and height is from 100 up to 300 m).
The red clay walls of the canyon are carved with deep fissures, forming caves, grottos and shady niches  of different shapes and sizes. They creat an impression of huge, ghost city inhabited by fantastic creatures.
The earth appears as if it has broken here, opening a deep gorge. Spreading bay leaf poplars, saksaul, tamarisk, reeds and kargans help create the atmosphere of an untouched and deserted place.
The  unique Ashen grove is located in the Charyn river valley. Here grows  the ash tree, a relict tree which lived through the catastrophic Glaciating Epoch and survived until the Quaternary Period.
Doubtlessly, the natural complexes of the Zailiy Alatau Mountains have great ecological, scientific and aesthetic value. It is extremely interesting, picturesque and varied in its forms, which bring to mind the quaint towers of fantastic castles.
Therefore, the canyon has another name "The Valley of Castles". The river flows through Carboniferous period sedimentation and rock. This unusually picturesque section has а very varied relief.
The landscape is broken up with numerous gullies and ravines here and there. The rushing Charyn river is full of rapids. Where it flows through wetlands, its banks are covered with thickets of willow, poplar, bar berry and tamarind.
The depths of the canyon have preserved а rare ash tree that has survived the Ice Age; the Sogdian ash was very common 25 million years ago. The Asian poplar groves are also of interest.
During the day it seems that two wolds exist with two different climates: one is cool and damp in the shadows of niches and steep rocks, and one is hot and dry like in the desert under the direct Spreading bay leaf poplars, saksaul, tamarisk, reeds and kargans help create the atmosphere  of an untouched and deserted place.

Winds and water eroded the riversides for many millenniums and turned them into whimsical slopes. The Charyn valley of Temples charms with the unique and intricate forms of its crags, which go down to the river steeply.
There aren't gentle lowering to the river: all of them are steep. The Charyn is one of the rivers, which has the VI category of difficulty to international standards at floating by the kayaks.
