Kara-Kamar complex.

History-architectural monuments of Termez.

“You want to be an author: read the story of the misfortunes of the human race - and if your heart does not overflow with blood, then leave the pen, or it will depict the cold gloom of your soul”

Rest in Termez.

A unique cave complex of Kara-Kamar, which has two thousand years old history located in the border of Uzbekistan and Turkmanistan at the rocky branches of  extensive Sherabad range.
The famous geographer and traveler N. Mays discovered the first caves in 1875 at the period of investigation of roads in the Eastern Bukhara. There are no substitutes in the design of the building of Kara-Kamar among artificial caves of the East.
The whole cave city consists of three big halls and set of premises that covers on three sides, which was carved huge rectangular "courtyard" with area of about two square meters and ten meters height in the Massif.
This is so noticeable that the architecture of cave was associated with natural environment according to designer’s intention. Inside the cave there were found inscriptions, which were written in Bactrian, Greek, Arabic and other languages. As well as, discoveries of two three-line Latin inscriptions have become a sensation in the scientific world, as Bactria was thousands of kilometers away from the Roman Empire.
In the inscription can be recognized the name of Gay Reks and probably, the name of the 15th Roman Legion 'Apollinaris. ". Julius Caesar formed the 15th Pannonian legion in 53 BC, and in 37 BC, he participated in the Parthian fight of Anthony that ended in complete defeat and surrender of the entire Roman army.
The Parthian King Herod II settled Roman prisoners in Margiana at the border of Sogdiana and Bactria but 20 BC.  Phraates IV returned them to Augustus. This was the only case to return the Roman prisoners to enemy.
It is remarkable that the Legion did not take part wars of the Roman Parthian at that time or later. According to other version: Guy Rex could be a member of one of the Roman trade or diplomatic missions aimed at Kushan Bactria.
The cave complex has complete similarity with the so-called mitreumams- a kind of temple buildings fans of Mitra syncretic religion that existed at the beginning of our era. This was created among the legionnaires and then spread throughout the Roman Empire and the most extending territory was from England to Iran.
