The mausoleum of Dzhoshi-khan is located in the ancient necropolis of Zhoshikhan, in the north-west of the Kyzyzhal mountains, on the left bank of the Karakengir river, 22 kilometers east of the village of Satpayev (not to be confused with the town of Satpayev), 26.7 kilometers to the south and slightly to the west from the village of Malshybai and 40.1 kilometers north and slightly west of Zhezkazgan in the Ulytau district of the Karaganda region.
The mausoleum of Dzhochi khan is one of the most famous and prominent monuments of Kazakh architecture of the period of Mongolian invasion. It is located in Ulitau district of Karagandy region in 50 kilometers to north-east from the town of Zhezkazgan.
It’s widely considered that the mausoleum was built in 1227 on the grave of Jochi khan, son of Genghis khan. There are other versions stating that the mausoleum was built by one of the descendants of Jochi. The mausoleum has square from and represents domed construction with doorway entrance.
The walls are plain, height of the doorway is 7,90 meters, the building was erected with burnt bricks of the following sizes: 30 х 30 х 6, 30 х 15 х 5, 25 х 25 х 6. The external perimeter of the mausoleum is 9,5 х 7,0 meters, inner perimeter is 5,2 5 х 5,25 meters.
The arch of the mausoleum was completed in a unique way. The building has double dome. External dome was not conserved. Earlier it was based on 17-sided drum of rare form and covered with plates and blue prints. Later after reconstruction in 2000 the dome was repaired.
nternal semispherical dome is made of circular lines on clay mortar. The floor of the mausoleum is made of bricks. The interior is lighted with two arched holes placed on side rooms. The history of the mausoleum is known only by legends.
In surrounding areas of the Ulitau Mountains was located the headquarters of Jochi Khan. He liked beautiful steppe landscapes of mountain slopes. According to legends, khan faced his death in hunting here torn by wounded lame koulan that kicked the khan from his horse and ripped his right hand.
There is another version that the khan was killed by the order of his father Genghis Khan for disobey. The legend about the burial of Jochi in the mausoleum was proved by soviet archeologists. In 1946 the body of Jochi khan was disentombed. In the grave was found a skeleton without right hand and broken scull.
In 1982 the monument was included in the list of protected objects. In 200 it was restored. In 2005 in Kazakhstan was issued jubilee coin of 500 tenge with image of the mausoleum of Dzhochi Khan.
