The Assy-Turgen observatory is located at the height of 2670 meters above sea level. Observation base of Astrophysical institute of AN of Kazakhstan. It is located on the plateau Asy, in 120 kilometers to the East from the city of Almaty, there is from the West on the East more than on 50 kilometers, in Asy valley, in the ridge Zailiysky Ala-Tau (Northern Tien-Shan).
Since 1975 intensively develops Astrophysical institute. In observatory the 1-meter telescope (reflector) functions. Since 1987 conduct works on a construction of the 1,5-meter telescope (reflector) of AZT - 20. This place for construction of observatory was offered by Konstantin Matveevich Salamakhin.
Began construction it was postponed in 1975 with a large amount of light in observatory on the Kamenskoe plateau. Constant observations began v1981 to year on the meter telescope of Zeiss AG. Installation of AZT-20 reflector by the 1.5th was in the late eighties of the XX century assumed.
The dome and the building of observatory were installed, on the tool, but there was not enough financing any more - the collapse of the USSR prevented. By 1991 two towers of telescopes, the hotel block were constructed and the meter telescope is constructed.
Since the beginning of the 90th years building 1.5 meter telescopes is stopped. Assy-Turgen - the only observatory in Kazakhstan with an ideal microclimate.
