“Last summer, the local photographer S. I. Borisov made a long trip around Gorny Altai with the special purpose of photographing it on the largest possible scale and then acquainting the general public with Altai with the help of a magic lantern. In addition to the landscape, which is his main work, his plan of filming also included genre sketches depicting the life of Altai aliens. During the trip, he took up to 1000 pictures for the stereoscope and open letters. Mr. Borisov intends to demonstrate Gorny Altai in 1000 views from north to south, from east to west ”.

“The name of the Barnaul photographer S. I. Borisov left a small mark in the history of photographs about the Kazakhstan Altai. Judging by the published photographs, Sergei Borisov also visited the present territory of the Kazakhstan Altai. His expedition was heading to Lake Rakhmanovsky, I have not seen photos of Lake Rakhmanovsky, but there is a photograph of Lake Maly Rakhmanovsky or Lake Arasan, which is 3 kilometers in front of Lake Rakhmanovsky.
There is also a series of photographs from the Idolgon (Itolgon) River, which is a left tributary of the Belaya Berel River and flows into the river northeast of the Sarsembay winter road. I do not know the travel route of the famous photographer, but it can be assumed that the expedition of Sergei Borisov was heading to the foot of Belukha Peak from the city of Barnaul, bypassing Ust-Kamenogorsk, further along the Bukhtarma River valley.
From the confluence of the Belaya Berel River with the Bukhtarma River, the expedition headed along the left side of the Belaya Berel River, where, most likely, there was a path to Lake Rakhmanovsky and from Lake Rakhmanovskoye through the Radostny Pass or another depression in the ridge that separates Lake Rakhmanovskoye from the Black Berel valley.
I went down to the valley of the Black Berel River, crossed the high-mountain plateau between the valleys of Belaya and Black Berel, descended along the valley of the Itolgon River into the valley of the Belaya Berel River and continued climbing along it to the famous waterfall on the Katun River and further to the Berel glaciers and the foot of Mount Belukha.
Photos with Kazakh yurts, Kazakh nomads suggest a jazz trail, and it is possible that the expedition crossed the eastern spur of the Katunsky ridge and descended into the Koksu river valley, then across the Samakha steppe to the Argut river, crossed it and visited the Kazakhs' nomad camps in the Jazator river valley”. Perhaps the expedition of Sergei Borisov made a route in the opposite direction ”(A.P.).
The Barnaul photographer Sergei Ivanovich Borisov was the first popularizer of the fantastic beauties of Gorny Altai among the broad masses.
The Altai State Museum of Local Lore contains the collection of the famous at the beginning of the XX century. photographer - Sergei Ivanovich Borisov, which includes hundreds of photographs and postcards depicting Barnaul and its townspeople, stunning views of the Altai Mountains and settlements, documents and personal belongings of the photographer.
The photographer's daughter - Tatyana Sergeevna Borisova, relatives - Antonina Fedorovna Sennikova, Tamara Fedorovna and Natalia Georgievna Malyukovs and numerous residents of Barnaul took part in the formation of the fund.
The future Barnaul photographer was born in the middle of the nineteenth century in Simbirsk. (The exact date of birth has not been established, presumably - 1859 - Ed.). According to the recollections of relatives, from early childhood he earned a living, was an "errand boy".
His first desire for creativity manifested itself in a theatrical booth, where he once got a job as a lamp refueller. With a pleasant voice, he began to participate in musical performances. After meeting with the accordion player Pyotr Nevinny, the young man went to work in a musical theater.
At the end of the 1880s. the road brought him to Siberia, to Barnaul. At first, he lodged in the house of the Barnaul cabman Vasily Petrovich Kleshov, where he met his future wife, Anastasia Petrovna, Kleshov's sister.
Soon a daughter was born - Tatyana, later, a son - Valentin. Daughter - Tatyana Sergeevna, clearly inheriting her creative abilities from her father, will become an actress, Valentin Sergeevich's life will end during the Great Patriotic War.
From the memoirs of Antonina Fyodorovna's grand-niece: "There were always many guests in the Borisovs' house, of course, Sergei Ivanovich was the soul of all undertakings." To this day, she still has a feeling of kindness and warmth that emanated from her grandfather.
Sergei Ivanovich died in 1935 and was buried at the Bulygin cemetery (near the Pivovarka river). Unfortunately, it is very difficult to establish the exact burial site. There is information that Before taking up photography, S.I. Borisov thoroughly familiarized himself with technical innovations in the field of photography, for which he made several trips to St. Petersburg and abroad.
On a trip abroad, he acquired a recipe for the technology of making photographic paper and tried to establish its production in Barnaul. Since 1894, almost all photographs have been published on a corporate passport with the name of the photographer, the address of the photo workshop, which he opened on Biyskaya Street (now Nikitin Street), which later became the largest and most popular in Barnaul.
Perhaps, a significant part of the photographs of the early XXth century, which are kept today in the family albums of the Barnulites, were made in this workshop of S.I.Borisov. For participation in the St. Petersburg exhibition in 1898, he was awarded a commendation.
The museum collection of photographs amazes with the abundance of subjects: portraits of the townspeople - a large family of relatives of the Kleshovs, public figure V.K.Shtilke, the family of priest Zelenev, flagship of the Altai cooperation A.E. Antonov from Staraya Taraba.
Numerous portraits replace the views of Barnaul, allowing you to take a walk through the old city, which has practically disappeared in the past. It is his photographs that help restore the appearance of the city at the beginning of the twentieth century.
But this is not all, he films the theatrical life of the city and industrial facilities, becomes the first popularizer of the fantastic beauties of Gorny Altai that were still unknown to the broad masses. Since 1907, S.I.Borisov began photo expeditions across the Altai Mountains.
The Barnaul newspaper of May 9, 1911, "Life of Altai" wrote: "Last summer, local photographer S. I. Borisov made a long trip to Gorny Altai with the special purpose of photographing it on the largest possible scale and then acquainting the general public with Altai with the help of a magical lantern.
In addition to the landscape, which is his main work, his plan of filming also included genre sketches depicting the life of Altai aliens. During the trip, he took up to 1000 pictures for the stereoscope and open letters. Mr. Borisov intends to demonstrate Gorny Altai in 1000 views from north to south, from east to west”.
In one summer, he managed to photograph the villages of Cherny Anuy, Ulalu, Chergu, Elekmonar, Chemal, Ongudai, the Katun River with its tributaries over a considerable length, bridges and ferry crossings across them.
S.I. Borisov climbed to Mount Belukha and took a series of photographs of the mountain itself and the glaciers in its area. Returning from the expedition, the photographer introduced the Barnaul residents to the results of their work. For this purpose, transparencies were hand-colored and an overhead projector was purchased. The demonstration took place on January 14 and 16, 1911 in the Barnaul People's House, and 2 - 3 sessions were given daily.
Borisov's atelier was located on one of the central streets of the town - Biyskaya (now Nikitin) between Moskovsky Prospekt (Prospect named after V.I. Lenin) and Cathedral Lane (Socialist Prospect). The demonstration of the transparencies was accompanied by comments from the author himself.
Not only Barnaul residents, but also residents of other Siberian cities could get acquainted with the pristine beauty of Gorny Altai. The Siberian Commercial and Industrial Calendar, published in 1911, used photographs of the photographer to illustrate the essay “Across Altai”. Black and white and color postcards became the final result of long photography.
"Trading House A. G. Morozov with Sons", "VK Sokharev's Bookstore" in Barnaul, the Swedish printing company - "Joint Stock Company Granberg in Stockholm" and other firms have issued numerous series of postcards with views of Barnaul and Altai Mountains.
The high professionalism of S.I.Borisov, his desire to capture what he saw, makes these cards extremely attractive for us, a century later. Looking at them, you can walk along narrow mountain paths with a photographer, look into the Kazakh ail for a wedding, admire the proud posture of an Altaian sitting on a horse, or walk along Ulaly Street, and in the Chemal area you will suddenly encounter the first summer residents.
Gorny Altai S.I.Borisov, majestic and mysterious, undoubtedly excited the imagination of the still not very sophisticated Russian traveler, called on the road. In 1920 - 1930 SI Borisov worked in the "Association" photo company, as evidenced by the few photographs of that period.
The professionalism and creativity of the photographer were marked with a diploma and a sign "Drummer of the Five-Year Plan". Sergei Ivanovich Borisov is a personality, undoubtedly, brightly gifted, addicted and very charming. Apparently, he had two passions in life - photography and theater.
S.I. Borisov was a regular participant in charitable performances of the Society for the Care of Primary Education, student performances and evenings. On January 29, 1917, residents of Barnaul celebrated the 25th anniversary of his stage activity in the People's House.
That evening, reading out memorable addresses, residents of Barnaul expressed their sincere gratitude disinterested worker: "Serving art, you are always sensitive to the needs of society and contributed to the success of the latter...".
We join these words, and we, living in the XXI century, Sergei Ivanovich Borisov, stopping the moment, saved for us something more than a photograph as a keepsake.
