Kurtogay valley is located at an altitude of 1086 meters above sea level, on left bank of Charyn River, 712 meters northeast of bridge over Charyn River (Chilik - Narynkol road), 38.8 kilometers to east and a little south of Bortagay reservoir, 49.3 kilometers southwest of village of Shonzhy, 13.1 kilometers northwest of village of Aksay, in Raiymbek district of Almaty region.
This is one of the best, most picturesque and accessible places in the Charyn River canyon. The area of the tract is 270,608 square meters, the perimeter is 2,132 meters. At this point, the height above sea level of the Charyn River bed is 1060 meters.
The width of the canyon reaches 200 meters, the river from the bridge to the end of the tract makes an intricate zigzag. If you are moving from Almaty in the direction of the village of Kegen, you need to drive 3 kilometers 635 meters from the turn to the village of Zhalanash and Saty to the Charyn River.
About 700 meters before the bridge, literally before the right bend in the road and the descent, you need to turn left from the highway onto a dirt road. This dirt road, after about 500 meters, will take you to the panoramic platform of the Kurtogay valley.
This panoramic platform, on the left bank of the Charyn River, dominates the canyon with breathtaking views. Below, the Charyn River winds like a blue ribbon, the opposite bank and the slope are cut by deep ravines, which together represent a unique landscape.
There is a large area with ancient burials, along the eastern edge, where you can walk and take interesting photos of the surrounding nature. After a panoramic photo shoot, you can go down the road to the river and rest and have lunch among the thickets of red barberry and in the shade of turanga.
