Cherny Glacier is situated between Perevalny Glacier to the west and Gorodetsky Glacier to the east, in the headwaters of the Ozernaya River. It lies east of the Ozerny Pass on the northern slope of the Zailiysky Alatau range, within the Ile-Alatau Nature Park in the Bostandyk District of Almaty.

Cherny Glacier is located at elevations ranging from 4,269.6 to 3,409 m. a. s. l. and belongs to the Bolshaya Almatinka River basin. It was named for the dark color of its moraine deposits by its discoverer, V. D. Gorodetsky, in 1916. This glacier can be classified as a short valley glacier - specifically, one situated in a valley carved out of a cirque.
The glacier has a length of 1.6 km, while its extent along the main ridge of the Zailiysky Alatau is 3.1 km. Its total area reaches 3.59 sq. km.,of this, firn fields account for 1.93 km², the exposed part of the glacier tongue for 0.61 km², and the buried section for 1.05 sq. km.
The positive glaciation difference is 311 meters, and the negative difference is 169 meters. The glacier coefficient is 3.2. The moraine deposits of the Cherny Glacier are composed primarily of dark-colored schists.
