The flowing Upper Lake Kolsai is located at an altitude of 2646 meters above sea level, located on the northern slope of the Kungei Alatau ridge, on the territory of the Kolsai Kolderi natural park in the Kegen district of the Almaty region.
One of the 5 tributaries of the Kolsai River, 6 kilometers long, flows into the lake, which originates from the moraine lake Sarybulak at an altitude of 3175 meters above sea level. The length of the Verkhniy Kolsai lake from the southwest to the northeast is 455 meters, the greatest width in the northern part of the lake is 309 meters.
The perimeter of the lake is 1255 meters, the area of ​​the lake is 77098 meters, the depth of the lake reaches 80 meters. The distance from Lake Sredniy Kolsai to Lake Verkhniy Kolsai is 3 kilometers, it is about 2 hours walk.
The Kolsai River flows out of the northwestern part of the lake. The lake has a natural dam. The water in the lake is dark and cold, it is the smallest lake among the two previous Kolsai lakes. The lake is surrounded by rocks; Tien Shan spruce and juniper grow along the shores of the lake.
The climate in this area is alpine: summer temperatures are up to 30 degrees during the day, and up to 5 - 10 degrees at night. Higher from the Upper Lake is the Sarybulak pass, 3274 meters above sea level.
