The handicraft settlement of potters Khambulz Tepa is located on the left (western) bank of the Amu Darya River, 2.6 kilometers south and slightly east of the village of Tashsak, 5 kilometers southeast of the village of Yangibazar, 6.1 kilometers northwest of the village of Pitnak in the Tuprakkala district of the Khorezm region.
Khumbuz tepa is a large handicraft settlement of potters of the 7th - 3rd centuries BC, located on the banks of the Amu Darya and providing ceramics (vessels, figurines) to the nearby large city of that time - Khazarasp, as well as other cities of Khorezm.
Most of the settlement is currently under fields and farmers' estates. On a small excavated site located on the banks of the Amu Darya, a pottery workshop, a furnace for burning ceramics, a temple of fire (the most revered sacred element among the Zoroastrians), a dakhma - an artificial hill for laying out corpses, the burial of a dog - one of the most revered sacred animals in Zoroastrians.
There was also a metalworking production on the territory of the settlement. The historical description of Khumbuz Tepe, as well as an analysis of the formation and development of handicraft production in the territory of Khorezm in the early period, was made by the famous Russian archaeologist, S. B. Bolelov, who excavated Khumbuz Tepa in the 1990s.
