The Sarkand Museum is located at an altitude of 775 meters above sea level, located 350 meters from the northern end of the village of Cherkasskoye, 700 meters southwest from the Cherkasy Defense memorial complex, 2 kilometers north from the right bank of the Lepsy River, in the Sarkand region Zhetysu region. 
The Museum of Cherkassy Defense was opened on January 1, 1968, at the same time the first exhibition was opened on the basis of an order from the Ministry of Culture of the Kazakh SSR. The museum was opened in the building where the headquarters of the defense participants was located during the Cherkassy defense.
In 1978, a new museum building and memorial were built. Today, the museum has a small exhibition dedicated to the Cherkassy defense. In 1978, a new museum building was built. In 2017, a major renovation of two buildings was carried out, one of which is concrete, and new exhibitions were created.
There are two exhibitions in the buildings: the history of the Sarkand region and, separately, the history of the Cherkassy defense. The exhibitions of the Sarkand region museum are presented in three halls: “History of the region before 1916”, “History of the region in the Soviet period”, “The region at the present stage”.
The exhibition complex "Cherkassy Defense", located in the building of the former headquarters of the Cherkassy Defense in a one-story wooden house built in 1910. The museum consisted of four halls, the exhibits of which tell about the historical event and the heroes of that time.
The museum's funds have 2,078 storage units in permanent storage, of which 1,539 storage units constitute the main fund. One of the main attractions of the museum is a three-inch cannon of the 1900 model, manufactured in 1904 at the Obukhov steel plant, thanks to which the troops participating in the Cherkassy defense managed to hold the line.
A large number of exhibits were collected and donated to the museum by local historians from Cherkassy. The director of the museum is Ekaterina Raketskaya, who has been working here for more than 40 years.
2018 marked the 100th anniversary of the Cherkassy defense. For the 100th anniversary of the Cherkassy defense, the museum building was restored, the bas-reliefs were removed from the facade of the building and a small section about the Cherkassy defense was left in the museum. Before that, the museum had a room for Mstislav Nikolsky.
