The major part of the reserve is presented with mountain-forest and steppe landscapes. Numerous forests where such trees as the birch, quaking asp and apple-tree grow are scattered along the mountain slopes.
One can also meet Alpine green meadows there. The steppe localities are mainly vegetated with bushes. Flora of the Reserve includes 1,100 species of higher plants, more than 50 species of rare plants including 26 listed in the Red Data Book of Kazakhstan, a publication similar to an endangered species list.
Abundant species include wild apricot trees (Armeniaca vulgaris), Sivers’ apple trees (Malus Sieversii), Kolpakovskiy tulips (Tulipa kolpakovskiana) etc. Fauna diversity is very rich with 2,000 species of identified invertebrates and 255 vertebrates, including 3 fish species, 2 amphibians, 6 reptiles, 177 birds and 42 mammals.
Mammals include the Tian Shan brown bear (Ursus arctos isabellinus), snow leopard (Uncia Uncia) and stone marten (Martes foina). The nature of the Almaty reserve is varied but its basis is mainly composed of different natural landscapes which inimitable beauty attracts a lot of tourists every year.
Almaty nature reserve, in the Zailyiiskii Alatau mountains of Almaty oblast, covers an area of 71,700 hectares. Rare and endangered fauna to be found here include ibisbill, golden eagle, lammergeyer, Turkestani lynx, snow leopard and Alpine ibex.
Edelweiss grow here. In reserve territory there are 22 kinds of animals and 28 kinds of plants from the Red book of Kazakhstan. The reserve has a museum in which expositions its activity is reflected, and also having passed on museum halls, it is possible will get acquainted with representatives of flora and the fauna, living on its territory.
