The monument to the scientist, archaeologist Alkey Margulan was erected in the park on the western side of the building of the Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan on January 14, 2010. Received primary education in aul school. Since 1915 he studied at a 3-class Russian school. At the end of 1919 he entered a teacher’s course in Pavlodar, graduating from which, in 1920 he returned to his native village and worked as a teacher.
Feeling the lack of education, he entered the Semipalatinsk Pedagogical College in 1921. During his studies in Semipalatinsk, he collaborates in the editorial offices of the Tan magazine and the Kazak Tip newspaper.
Here he meets M. Auezov, on whose advice in 1925 he went to Leningrad, where he entered the literary faculty of the Oriental Institute. At the same time, he attends lectures at the University of Leningrad and the Institute of Art History.
During these years A. Margulan was fond of collecting literary, archival materials on the history and culture of the Kazakh people, literary activity. The works of prominent Russian and foreign writers first reached the Kazakh reader in his translations.
In 1926 - 1927 He took part in the Kazakhstan and Altai expeditions of the Special Committee for the Study of Union and Autonomous Republics of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1929, Margulan completed his studies at the Eastern Institute.
In 1930 - 1938 Margulan is the scientific secretary of the Committee of the New Alphabet under the People's Commissariat of Kazakh SSR, a graduate student of the State Academy of the History of Material Culture at the USSR Academy of Sciences.
In 1938, upon a call from the Council of People's Commissars of the Kazakh SSR, he was transferred to Almaty to the Kazakh branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1943 he defended his thesis on written monuments of the Kypchak ethnocultural community.

The result of his research in the field of the history of culture of the Kazakh people was the defense in 1945 of his doctoral dissertation on the theme: "Epic legends of the Kazakh people." The epic genre of oral poetic creativity, the history of the material and spiritual culture of the Kazakhs received a comprehensive study in the writings of Margulan.
He justified the dating and revealed the historical and social roots of folk epic works. In addition, the objects of his research were monuments of ancient architecture, he discovered unique archaeological sites of the Bronze and Early Iron Age - Begazy, Sanguyr, Belasar and others.
The results of archaeological research of the territories of Central Kazakhstan were summarized in fundamental monographs: "The Ancient Culture of Central Kazakhstan" ( written under his leadership and with direct participation, in 1967 awarded the Ch. Valikhanov Prize), "Begazy-Dandybaev Culture of Central Kazakhstan" and "History of the Kazakh SSR "in five volumes, for the writing of which Margulan as one of the leading authors in 1982 was awarded the State Prize of the Kazakh SSR.
Margulan has always been multifaceted in his scientific interests. His field of vision also included such areas as music, agriculture, metallurgy, and others. Since the mid-50s. Under his leadership, materials are collected about the outstanding Kazakh scientist Ch. Valikhanov.
Margulan - editor and compiler of the collected works of C. Valikhanov, author of numerous monographs about him. Margulan successfully combines great scientific and teaching activities with huge organizational work, leading for many years the Coordinating Council for the Ethnogenesis of the Kazakh people, the Scientific Council of the Institute of History, Archeology and Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR, the Specialized Council for the Protection of Doctoral and Ph.D.
Over the years, Margulan has carried out more than 300 scientific and popular science publications. For fruitful activities he was awarded orders and medals of the USSR. Laureate of the State Prize of the Kazakh SSR (1982).
