“Zhasybai lived in those distant years when the Kazakhs ousted the Kalmyks who lived there from the Bayan-Aul region. He was a famous hero who defeated his enemies more than once. Once, on the instructions of the main leader of the Kazakhs, Batyr Olzhabai, Zhasybai, with a small detachment, had to hold the Kalmyk Khan with a thousand thousand Kalmyks in the mountains. The battle was terrible, and Zhasybai showed miracles of courage until the Kalmyk Khan wounded him to death, hitting Zhasybai’s neck, which was not covered with sauyt (chain mail), with a bullet. When they later began to remove this sauyt from the dead Zhasybay, thousands of bullets were shaken out of it... The Kazakhs trembled, but at that time Olzhabay arrived in time to the battlefield, and the gorges were filled with the cries of Kalmyks begging for mercy. But Olzhabai answered their khan that they were all not worth the little finger of the murdered Zhasybai, and ordered his soldiers to beat the Kalmyks without any mercy. The Kalmyks fled, and for a long distance their path later turned out to be strewn with dead bodies. Olzhabai was such a hero that the strongest horse staggered when he sat on it; sitting on horseback, he could easily tear the grass in the field..."
