The Upper moraine lake Karasai is located at an altitude of 3414 meters above sea level, located on the northern slope of the Kungei Alatau ridge on the territory of the Kolsai Kolderi natural park, in the Kegen district of the Almaty region.
The flowing, dammed Upper Karasai Lake is located in the upper reaches of the Karasai Gorge, 220 meters south of the Lower Karasai Lake. The lake is 487 meters long and 290 meters wide in the southern part.
The perimeter of the lake is 1254 meters, the area is 97,563 square meters. North of the main ridge of Kungey Alatau, 750 meters south of the Upper Karasai Lake, there is the Karasai glacier 3 kilometers long from east to west and 1.5 kilometers from north to south with an area of 3.81 square kilometers.
The cascade of lakes and the Karasai River are fed from this glacier. The upper part of the glacier, located on the ridge, is at an altitude of 4090.3 meters above sea level. In 1.9 kilometers to the north-east of the lake in the main ridge of the Kungey Alatau ridge there is the Burgan-Suu pass with a height of 3755.5 meters above sea level.
The lake has an elongated shape facing downward and expanding to the south. The water entering the lake is filtered deep under the moraine, and the water flowing out of the lake is located deep in the moraine in the northern part of the lake.
