Burial and memorial complex "Mound of 37 Warriors" is located at an altitude of 882 meters above sea level, is located in an intermountain valley surrounded by low mountains up to 1266 meters above sea level - the Korpetai mountains in northwest, Tolebai in northeast, Nurtai in southeast and Karatas in southwest, 2.5 kilometers northwest of village of Korpetai, in Nurken rural district, in Aktogai district, Karaganda region.
The burial and memorial complex "Mound of 37 Warriors" of the early Iron Age is a unique archaeological monument of the Saka era, consisting of a large central mound, from which two stone ridges, known as "whiskers", extend to the east. To the north of the central mound, 37 small mounds are located in an arc, which gave the complex its name.
Numerous stone menhirs up to two meters high, as well as dozens of small stone circles, are installed around these structures. The central element of the complex is a large mound 35 meters in diameter, lined with stones. To the east of it is a smaller mound 11 meters in diameter and 0.63 meters high.
From this small mound in the eastward direction, two parallel chains of stones about 100 meters long, known as "whiskers", extend. On the northern side of the complex, at a distance of 80 - 100 meters, there are 37 small stone mounds, built in an arc from west to east.
The diameter of these mounds ranges from 5 to 8 meters, and the height is from 0.3 to 0.6 meters. Around the main mounds and "whiskers" there are numerous menhirs - vertically standing stone steles up to two meters high. The entire complex is about 480 meters long and includes 136 menhirs.
History of research into burial and memorial complex "Mound of 37 Warriors".
The complex was first discovered and explored in 1952 by the Central Kazakhstan archaeological expedition led by Alkey Margulan, four mounds were excavated. During the excavations of four small mounds, fragments of pottery and bones of domestic animals were found.
In 1997, the Sarya Aka archaeological expedition conducted additional topographic research and drew up plans for the complex. In 2013, the complex was restored, which allowed it to be preserved. In May 2016, photographer and traveler Boris Rezvantsev conducted the first aerial photography of the complex using a hexacopter, which allowed him to obtain detailed images of the monument's structure.
Purpose and hypotheses of burial and memorial complex "Mound of 37 Warriors".
The exact purpose of the "Mound of 37 Warriors" complex remains a subject of scientific debate. Among the hypotheses put forward: An astronomical observatory: it is assumed that the complex could have been used as a solar-lunar calendar to determine the phases of the sun, moon, and eclipses.
Place of rituals: perhaps the onset of the Navruz holiday was celebrated here or memorial ceremonies were held in honor of the noble Saka ruler buried in the main mound. The "Mound of 37 Warriors" complex is included in the State List of Historical and Cultural Monuments of Local Significance of the Karaganda Region, which emphasizes its importance for the cultural heritage of Kazakhstan.
