A trip from Fort Shevchenko to Makhtum Baba Mosque.
The Makhtum Baba Mosque dating from the XIV - XV centuries is located north of the Oy tract, on the ancient necropolis of Hang Baba, 26.7 kilometers to the east and slightly south of the city of Fort Shevchenko, 120 meters north-west of the Hanga Baba necropolis, 19 kilometers to the north-east of the village of Kyzylozen in the Tupkaragan district of the Mangistau region.
The monument was first taken under state protection by the Decision of the Mangyshlak Executive Committee of the Regional Council of People's Deputies No. 121 of 03/25/1982. The Makhtum Baba Mosque is located on the Kanga Baba necropolis, which is currently included in the State List of Historical and Cultural Monuments of Local Significance by the Decree of the Akimat of Mangystau Region No. 3 dated January 5, 2018.
Among the people about the Maktum Baba mosque, there are such references to the mosque - in the Oguz-Kipchak period, the mosque was used as a caravanserai, later as a mosque-madrasah. The mosque is a multi-chamber structure of several large and small rooms connected by arched passages.
The walls of the mosque are built of semi-finished stones using clay mortar, using the method of inclined "oblique" masonry (earthquake-resistant). Judging by the destroyed areas, it can be assumed that initially the multi-chamber structure had domed ceilings.
The descendant of Imam Hussein, Saint Maktum Baba, came to Mangyshlak from Persia, where the Turkmens of Kurekaly lived, after a while a significant number of murids joined him, and at that time not a single tree grew in the Hanga area
Once the murids came to Maktum Baba and asked him for permission to take a walk in the garden. To which he said to them: "Today do not go anywhere, if until tomorrow you do not find gardens nearby, then I will let you go there."
The murids listened to him and stayed, and the next day early in the morning they saw that the entire nearby mountain was covered with excellent trees with many fruits. Fascinated by this sight and astonished by the miracle that had happened, they came to Maktum Baba and fell at his feet, repenting of their sins.
After that, the number of Maktum Baba's murids began to increase and reached several thousand. After the death of Maktum Baba, the gardens that were not looked after by anyone began to be destroyed, until now only a few mulberry trees have survived.
In the same miraculous way, gardens appeared on the Sultan Epe plain. It happened like this: once, when the Sufi Kheirullah was sitting in seclusion, engaging in pious reflections, several people came to him on one side and several people on the other.
Those who came sat down and began to talk, they talked about the saints: some gave an advantage over all the saints Sultan Epe, praising him, while others especially praised Maktum Baba, especially because with one word he covered the desert mountain with magnificent gardens.
Hearing this, the Sufi Kheirullah told them the following: “If Maktum Baba made gardens in one word, then I, having only an insignificant particle of the Sultan Epe's merits, will show them to you, climb this mountain, look at the plain and you will see such gardens on it as you wish."
To which the supporters of Maktum Baba declare to him that he is insane. Hearing this, the Sufi Kheyrulla exclaimed in a fit of anger: "Huve-hak!" (the truth), jumped up and began to spin around its axis, then quickly ran up the mountain where he fell, all those present followed him and soon saw with great surprise that the entire plain, over a large area, was covered with excellent trees.
And then they all began to loudly glorify God, fell at the feet of the Sufi Kheyrulla and became his loyal murids.
