A shelter for tourists - a hut of the "Society of Proletarian Tourism and Excursions", with two floors of bunks for 20 people - at the mouth of the Gorelnik River was built in 1932 on the initiative of A. P. Bergrin.
In 1936, the Gorelnik tourist base was opened on this site.
In 1938, a new large building was built above the log hut, which housed the Gorelnik tourist base.
In 1943, it housed the All-Union School of Mountain Rifle Unit Instructors, which trained 1,500 instructors and 12,000 mountain riflemen in 2 years. The school was created by order of I. V. Stalin.
After the end of the war, mountain climbers were trained here until 1953, and since 1954, Gorelnik has again accepted tourists.
In 1963, the tourist camp was visited by the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR Kosygin and the Minister of Defense of the USSR Ustinov. After their visit, the Ministry of Finance of the USSR allocated a loan to the Kazakh SSR in the amount of 700,000 rubles for the development of tourism in the republic.
In the 60s, Gorelnik was considered the best tourist center in the USSR.
After a devastating mudflow in July 1973, when giant boulders weighing several tons each buried the tourist center and the tourists there, Gorelnik was closed. Many athletes died, including the women's basketball team from Dzhambul, who were vacationing in the camp at the time. Subsequently, the tourist center was closed due to the mudflow danger.
