Trip to Chatyr-Kol lake from Tahs-Rabat caravanserai.

The mountain lake Chatyr-Kol, is in the At-Bashi district of the Issyk-Kul region. Lake height above sea level 3530,2 meters above sea level. The area of groundwater level is 170,6 kilometers square. Length of the lake is 23 kilometers, width is 11 kilometers, the average volume of water of 8,5 kilometers cubic.
The lake Chatyr-Kol is located in the intermountain Chatyr-Kol lowland in the south from the width ridge Atbashi and in the north from the ridge Torugart-Tau. Length of ridges is 48 km, the greatest width is 18 km.
The prevailing depth of 12 - 13 meters, in the western part to 18 - 19 meters, in east - 8 meters. Into the lake flows 41 small the rivers, large of them: Kara-Suu, length is 17 km; Kara-Ty, 12 km, etc. Salinity of the lake of 2%.
Water pure, transparent. Water temperature in the summer 10 C, at a depth. 0,6 m - to 4,40 C. Freezes in October, thaws at the end of April. Power of ice is 0,25 - 1,5 m, in a southeast part a set of mineral sources.
Relative height of surrounding mountains of 300 - 900 meters above sea level. In the neighborhood of the lake prevail, generally steppe landscapes. The relief of poorly dismembered lake and river accumulative plain is characteristic of a hollow of the lake.
Coast are generally low, in the South and the East mainly marshy also consist of 6 terraces. Only in the north, where rocks of limestones of the middle Paleozoic rise almost closely to water, coast high, have an appearance of ledges.
The catchment area of the pool about 1050 square kilometers, however because of droughty climate, insignificant development of a modern freezing in mountains, the rivers is developed poorly. From 24 rivers flowing into the lake, only the river Kek-Argyn has a constant waterway.
In the winter of the bed of small rivers freezes through to the bottom. The lake bottom everywhere has hillocks and holes a structure. On March 11, 1859 at return from Kashgar to Chatyr-Kol visited the lake the Kazakh traveler and the researcher of Central Asia Shokan Valikhanov.
Here on the lake Chatyr-Kol, the scientist heard many legends and legends. The lake Valikhanov sizes, are given approximately: about 10 versts of width and about the 20th length, not less than 7000 feet (2100 meters) of absolute height.
Shokan Valikhanov in the diary wrote: "the 18th (on March 18, 1859 on old style, on new - on March 21) we came to the extensive valley of the mountain lake Chadyrkul (Chatyr-Kul) surrounded from all directions with mountains and dressed by deep snow cover.
The lake Chadyrkul has about 10 versts of width and about the 20th length, it has to have a high position, not less than 7000 feet of absolute height". To Valikhanov the lake under the name Sengerkul was represented in a left bank of Karadaryi.
The name used nowadays and the valid location of the lake became known thanks to Valikhanov descriptions. Valikhanov data on the lake sizes differ from reality a little. Valikhanov points also to a high position of the lake", - the Kyrgyz scientist-geographer S. Umurzakov writes.
Shokan was the first overseas traveler who visited this most beautiful lake. From there through valleys of the rivers Atbashi and Uzgen Valikhanov caravan came for the Kokand strengthening the Kurtka located on the right river bank Naryn.
Further followed in the northeast direction, up Naryn, and on the sixth of April in the area Dzhetymcheku crossed the main caravan road conducting through Zaukinsky pass to the Issy-Kul valley.
