On May 17, 2011 in the neighborhood of Almaty in the Low-Almaty gorge there was a catastrophic hurricane. On huge a gorge, on its different slopes trees were tumbled down, some are uprooted from the earth. From trees in a huge number, the Tien-Shan fir-tree (Shrenka) generally suffered.
On May 17th the usual thunder-storm turned in these parts into a gale-force wind which meteorologists did not observe earlier. Around the high-mountain skating rink Medeo and much above a skating rink the zone of low pressure was formed, and the storm front was included into the gorge.
Air masses and streams of air received the huge speed which brought down trees, pulling out them from the earth. The tornado moved on mountain gorges and valleys turned out with a root the Tien-Shan fir-trees more than 100 years with age.
The hurricane stormed, about, 40 minutes, more than 69 thousand trees on the area of 480 hectares were during this time destroyed. The Ministry of Agriculture of Kazakhstan declared what on elimination of consequences of a hurricane will be required, al least 3 years.
The died trees need to be removed as death of the wood leads to accumulation of a huge amount of combustible material, there is a soil erosion, the fires. Besides, the escaped Tien Shan fir-trees can be infected with fungi and parasites who breed on the died trees.
320 foresters from all Kazakhstan took part in mitigation of consequences of natural disaster, the battalion of the Ministry of Emergency Situations was involved. The shape of the largest sporting and tourist venues of Kazakhstan - Medeo and Shymbulak suffered.
