The drainless, shallow, fresh lake Barakkol is located at an altitude of 591 meters above sea level on the southwestern continuation of the Tengiz-Korgalzhyn depression, east of the Arganaty (Zhaksy-Arganaty) mountain range, 46.2 kilometers northeast of the village of Korgasyn at 76 kilometers to the north-west of the Belbulak village, 48 kilometers to the south and a little west of the Tersakkan village in the Ulytau district of the Karaganda region.
The length of Lake Barakkol from south to north in the eastern part is 4 kilometers, the maximum width is 3.2 kilometers. Silt is widespread from the edge of the shore 240 meters into the depth of the lake. The lake area is 12 square kilometers, the greatest depth is 2.9 meters.
Annual fluctuations in water level are 0.5 meters. Mineralization of water 1.33 grams per 1 liter. Food is mainly rain-fed. Freezes in early November, opens in April. The lake's water surface is open; reeds grow only along the coastline.
The water level varies considerably from year to year. The lake is used for livestock watering. On the shores of the Barakkol, birds typical of the lakes of the Kazakh Uplands nest in the autumn period, there is a high concentration, in particular, geese, white-fronted goose (Anser albifrons) and Anser erythropus.
During the migration period, an ordinary flamingo appears on the lake, in small groups or flocks of 100 - 200 birds. The lake is included in the "List of reservoirs of special state significance or special scientific value, the use of which may be limited or completely prohibited", in the list of key bird areas of Kazakhstan, approved by the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The name of the lake, according to one version, is associated with the name of the Kazakh sultan Barak.
