“The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn”

Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Hiking on high-mountainous ridges of Kazakhstan Altai.

It is used to refer the system of low Kalbinsky mountains and hills located on the left bank of the Irtysh River to Kazakh Altai. Mountain area stretches for 200 kilometers from northwest of the mouth of the Char River (Shar) to the southeast to Bukhtarma water basin.
The Char River - left tributary of Irtysh has its rise in Kalbinsky Mountains. Ancient Irtysh flew along the valley of this River in far geological past. The greatest width of Kalbinsky elevation is 80 kilometers. "Kalba" is the local name of wild garlic which can be found everywhere in the mountains.
Kalbinsky elevation consists of low hills, ranges and small ridges often with flatten crest. The highest top reaches 1600 meters above sea level. The most remarkable hill is Aiyrtau (1003 meters) which is located 4 kilometers to the southwest of Ust-Kamenogorsk, near highway running from Almaty.
Aiyrtau looks like pair of ideal stone pyramids piled up among the hills. Kalbinsky mountains are characterized by steppe vegetation: aspen-birch small woods, osier beds and many various bushes (meadow-sweet, honeysuckle, bird cherry and wood) grow along clefts and valleys of small Rivers.
Sometimes pine light forest can be met. In summertime these places are full of lizards, whip snakes and copperhead snakes, filled with sweet-voiced singing of larks and nightingales, rosy pastors skimming over the bushes, as well as demoiselle cranes, lapwings, snipes, hazel grouses, black grouses and partridges can be often met.
Rock thrushes, eagles, falcons, hoopoes, black eagle-owls and kestrel are lodged in rocks. And ponds are favorite place for teals and ducks, sandpipers and halcyons. Among mammals there are many marmots and susliks, mountain hare, and sometimes steppe polecat, ermine and chipmunk can be met there as well as lynxes and wild rams.
Kalbinsky winters are very windy, often with snowstorms blocking highways.
