Zhaman Sauran mosque.

Zhaman Sauran mosque in Mangistau.

"About 35-40% of historical, archaeological and architectural monuments of Kazakhstan are concentrated on the land of Mangistau. Some of the most outstanding works are underground mosques. These original architectural structures are not found anywhere else in Kazakhstan and are characteristic only of Mangistau."

Murat Kalmenov, Otynshy Koshbayuly. "Underground mosques of Mangistau".

Trip to Zhaman Sauran mosque in Mangyshlak.

Underground mosque Zhaman Sauran is located at an altitude of 184 meters above sea level, in north-eastern part of Eastern Karatau ridge, 15.7 kilometers north-east of village of Ondy, 37.1 kilometers to east and slightly south of village of Shetpe, 14.3 kilometers to south-east of village of Zharmysh, in Mangistau district of region of same name.
The monument is located near the spring of the same name, in the foothills of the Eastern Karatau ridge. The monument is carved out on limestone-sand rock, and consists of two rooms that have the shape of an irregular circle. In the center of the first room, a pillar was left, possibly to ensure the strength of the ceiling.
A niche was carved out on it, possibly intended for a lamp. The entrance to the second room is through a rectangular opening, perhaps it was closed with stone masonry, today only the lower masonry has survived. Inside this room there is a burial, which is covered with white cloth.
At the time of the monument's determination, that is, in October 2007, the cloth was fresh, it indicates that the place is visited by pilgrims. We do not have any written sources on this monument yet.
