Local sights Uy-Tas stone is located on the left side of the Bukhtarma river in the Katon-Karagai region of the East Kazakhstan region on the territory of the Katon-Karagai national natural park, at an altitude of 1390 meters above sea level.
The stone lies on the left side of the road, if you go from the village of Archaty, 87 meters from the left bank of Bukhtarma, from the cordon of the rangers of the park to the stone 5 kilometers. The stone is located in the valley of the Bukhtarma river between the Southern Altai ranges and at the junction of the Listvyaga ridge with the western spurs of the Ukok plateau.
It should be noted that there are a lot of stones of a slightly smaller size on the left bank of the Bukhtarma River. The stone has been known since ancient times, its fate is unknown. It can be assumed that during one of the strong earthquakes, many stones of various sizes rolled down from the northern slope of the Southern Altai ridge.
From a distance, the stone resembles a large house in size, therefore it received the name Uy-Tas (translated from Kazakh - Stone House). After the end of their service, the soldiers of the local border outpost developed a tradition to write their names on the stone, which they apply with paint of various colors.
The stone about 5 meters high is a huge block of gray granite weighing more than 500 tons.
