Walk to Lake Shaitankol in Karkaraly Park.

Ecological walks in Karkaraly Park.

"On the very first Sunday, the club members held a picnic in my honor in the mountains, where a very strange lake was hidden in the rocky folds. These granite boulders in the steppe mountains are so bizarre, so many cracks, passages, and turns, that rarely can anyone find this lake right away. Everyone wanders around, thinking, 'The devil is leading the way,' that's why they called it 'Devil's Lake.'"

Hiking trails in Karkaraly Park.

Among the coniferous peaks of Karkaraly Nature Park, framed by granite cliffs and centuries-old pines, lies one of the most mysterious places in Central Kazakhstan – Lake Shaitankol, which means "Devil's Lake" in Kazakh. This small mountain mirror, nestled at an altitude of approximately 1,133 meters above sea level, seems to have stepped straight from the pages of ancient legends.
Legend of Shaitankol.
Since ancient times, locals have said that a guardian spirit, Shaitan, lives in the depths of the lake, capable of punishing those who disturb the peace of nature. According to another version, a beautiful girl lived in these parts. Unable to bear separation from her lover, she threw herself into the lake, and since then, her soul has guarded the surface of the water from curious and rude people.
They say that on quiet evenings, you can hear the gentle sigh of the wind over the water – as if it were whispering ancient words of love and sorrow.
Path to Lake Shaitankol.
The hiking trail to Lake Shaitankol begins from the western outskirts of Karkaralinsk. The road first winds through birch groves and meadows with fragrant herbs, then slowly ascends among pine trees covered in a soft carpet of moss. Along the way, marvelous views of the Karkaraly mountain range open up.
After about an hour and a half of leisurely climbing, the traveler reaches a rocky belt where, behind the cliffs, a lake suddenly appears – dark and calm, as if carved by the hand of a great master. The shores of Lake Shaitankol are rocky and in places difficult to access.
But this is precisely what gives it its special appeal – the place remains untouched and pristine. The water is so clear that you can see the stones at the bottom, and the surface reflects the clouds and pine crowns.
What to see near Lake Shaitankol.
Near the lake are routes to the peaks of Bessmertiya and Koktas, from where a magnificent panorama of the Karkaraly National Park opens up. There are also picturesque meadows here, perfect for a picnic while watching the sun's rays filter through the pine branches.
Nature lovers should take note of the flora: rare species of ferns, junipers, and fragrant thyme grow nearby, filling the air with the aroma of mountain summer.
Atmosphere of Lake Shaitankol.
At dawn, Shaitankol is shrouded in a gentle mist, as if refusing to awaken from ancient dreams. The water is still and clear, reflecting the first rays of the sun, and the air is filled with the freshness of pine needles and damp earth. By midday, the lake comes alive: its surface shimmers with blue and emerald hues, the forest fills with the rustling of leaves, the chirping of grasshoppers, and the calls of birds.
In the evening, silence reigns over the water once again - only gentle waves gliding across the mirror-like surface, reflecting the crimson glow of the sunset as it recedes into the distance. At this time, the lake seems especially mysterious and profound, as if it holds not only the reflection of the sky but also the secrets of the Karkaraly Mountains.
