Sarysu River is formed by confluence of the Zhana-Sarysu and its right tributary, Karaozek, at an altitude of 504 m. a. s. l., 20.7 kilometers northeast of the settlement of Zhanaarka and 10.7 kilometers southwest of Bidayyk Reservoir in Zhanaarka District of Ulytau Region.
The Sarysu River flows through the Sarysu steppe across three regions of Kazakhstan: Karaganda, Ulytau, Turkestan, and Kyzylorda. Nikolai Nikitovich Palgov, an academician of the Kazakh SSR Academy of Sciences, professor, glaciologist, and head of the geography department (1945-1970), described this steppe in a short article in 1950.
The river's headwaters are the Aksu and Narbak Rivers, which merge to form the Zhana-Sarysu River, which soon flows into the Bidaybyk Reservoir (formerly the Polivnoye Reservoir). At the same time, the small Shotan River flows into the reservoir from the north.
The Aksu River originates near the village of Akoy (previously known as Prostornoye until 2002) in the Shetsky District of the Karaganda, Region. After passing through the Ulytau Region, the river forms the administrative border between the Turkestan and Kyzylorda Regions for 110 kilometers.
The river flows through the Kyzylorda Region for 77 kilometers. At kilometer 59, after the Sarysu River begins its flow through the Kyzylorda Region, the Telikol Canal branches off from the riverbed. In the Telikol natural landmark, the Sarysu channel noticeably narrows, and after 10 kilometers, the river ends its journey in Lake Telikol.
The length of the Sarysu varies, depending on the flood season, from 800 to 761 kilometers. The basin area is up to 81,600 square kilometers. Previously, according to archaeological excavations, the Sarysu, Irgiz, Turgai, and Chu rivers shared a common drainage basin, the Syr Darya
As the climate became increasingly arid and the crust was uplifted, the vast Aral Sea basin fragmented into several separate systems. However, due to tectonic events, the Uzboy ceased flowing into the Caspian Sea and flowed northward into the Aral Sea as the Amu Darya River.
